New Contenders Storm Ramen Champion Bugis+

Last Thursday, Ramen Champion at Bugis+ welcomed their 3 new ramen chefs with a grand promotion of 100 bowls of ramen and 50% off throughout the day. An impressive queue lined up along level 4 of Bugis+ waited anxiously for the store to be opened on 4 July 2013.

It’s reality television in real life. Every year, this popular Japanese food venue will invite some of the best Ramen masters and chefs in Japan to Singapore for a stint of one year. Their goal is to impress the diners with their scrumptious and authentic taste of Japan and influence the customers to vote for them.

Despite being popular among its followers, in June 2013, Ramen Champion bid farewell to Menya Iroha, Tai-sho-ken and Aoyama and welcome three new contenders – Muso, Buta God and Menban Yamagishi Kazuo on 1 July 2013.

MENBAN YAMAGISHI KAZUO is named after the legendary inventor of Tsukemen (dipping noodles) – Kazuo Yamagishi is given the title “Master of Ramen”. This shop is opened by his successor who follows Yamagishi’s secret recipe but with his new style. Probably the closest to Tai-sho-ken’s ramen so if you miss it, do try it and compare.

MUSO is the No.1 Ramen Champion 2012 (Hong Kong). This unrivaled chef with outlets in Tokyo and Hong Kong comes to Singapore for a new challenge. Chef Masaaki Kawamura’s ramen broth holds plenty of pork fat, which makes it rich and unique in flavor.

Brave, new contender BUTA GOD specializes in pork ramen. Chef Mamoru Kanaya matches sliced marinated pork belly and poached egg to create the perfect combination of the slightly sweet Tonkotsu broth. Try the Extra Pork Ramen to satisfy your stomach.

Ramen Champion held a grand promotion on 4 July 2013 offering free bowls of ramen to the first 100 customers. Needless to say, queuing is one of our nation’s favourite pastime and when there is free food there is bound to have a large crowd.

When I reached Bugis+ level 4 that morning the queue had extended to Crystal Jade HK Café. And I heard from the restaurant manager that some people were in the queue as early as 9 o’clock. (Did they think it’s free ramen for breakfast?)

These are six ramens given out for free (100 bowls) and 50% throughout the day:

Ikkousha: Ajitama Ramen – S$13.50

Gantetsu: HOKKAIDO Tonkotsu Ramen – S$11.00

Buta God Tonkotsu: Tonkotsu Sukiyaki Ramen – S$12.00

Menban Yamgishi Kazuo: Ajitama Ramen – S$12.50

Muso Ajitama Cha Cha Ramen – S$13.00

Bario: Ajitama Ramen – S$14.50

The prices listed are before the discount. For me, I choose BARIO’s Ajitamen Ramen because I feel it’s the most value for money for this promotion. I also had a taste of the two champions – MUSO and IKKOUSHA.

I love the new set of Ramen Champion’s posters which look like some kind of ramen manga adapted into a movie promotional posters.

Singapore Blog Awards mark MalcolmSunny.com 1st Year Anniversary

Last year, under the encouragement of a friend, Darren Ng I registered my previous blog malxc.livejournal.com for the Singapore Blog Awards. Needless to say, I didn’t even manage to get shortlisted as a finalist for any category.  Unsatisfied with just ranting about personal issues I faced, I started MalcolmSunny.com to scribble my happy thoughts.

1044150_10151584467849584_839616091_n

A year on, blogging has certainly opened up a lot of opportunities for me. To begin with I got to know many friends. I remembered meeting Christina and Jeremy during last year’s Singapore Twitter Frenzy at Wave House, Sentosa which shaped my thinking of blogging. Previously I had always viewed my blog as a personal online journal for me to share my feelings with friends.

My interest in lifestyle blogging started while I doing marketing for Singapore Flyer and studying part-time at SIM University. Initially started out as a channel for me to hone my writing skills, blogging has become an integrated part of my life and a passion now. It has opened up more opportunities for networking, invitations to exclusive product launches and previews as well as trips overseas.

Thanks to Omy.sg, I was given the opportunity to experience Brunei and it was during that trip that I got to know Karen, Andy, Tiffany and Deenise. Besides catching up like Bruneian bloggers, we also exchanged tips on blogging and social media.

I’m very proud of my travel mates. In fact, all four of them were the finalists for this year’s Singapore Blog Awards. Karen and Deenise were also nominated for several categories.

Held at Shanghai Dolly, I spotted familiar faces and friends like Smith Leong, William Tan, Elrica, Mint Leong, Regina Chow, Joey Ong, Darren Sim, Hong Peng and Tse Lyn who were the finalists for the main and special categories for this year’s Singapore Blog Awards. Blogger friends like Joyce, Valentine, Colin and Damien were there to cheer them on too. Luke and Shirley were also the finalists but I didn’t manage to spot them.

PARCO next NEXT – Rocks the Rack

943128_10151388385971254_130323141_n

Welcome onboard and step up to PARCO next NEXT, where young designers’ vivid imaginations meet fashion fantasies, creating beautiful manifestations from myriad points of references.

On Saturday 18 May 2013, local fashion label, LION EARL invited us to join them on a fashion journey of discovery: from outer space to sailing on the high seas, from plain basics to Peranakan-inspired digital prints. From boxy, airy shapes to body-contour dressing and androgyny. From ghetto chic to the streets of Asia. We witness the launch of PARCO next NEXT latest collection.

Rêvasseur

“Run away and join the navy to sail the seven seas. From cute manga sailors to sexy sirens bidding “ships ahoy!”, Revasseur’s nautical inspiration has everything from naughty to nice!”

Comments: My first reaction to this collection by Revasseur was “oh, how cute!”, it was as if the characters from the famous Japanese manga ‘One Piece’ coming to live on the runway. As we all know Singapore is an island and what other way to bring out the sunny heritage of our country through this nautical-inspired fashion.

Comments: Have you heard of the mission to launch humans onto Mars by 2023? It’s okay if you are not a fan of astronomy because this new collection by Coupe-Cousu offers menswear from both the bold and conservative. Opt for the bright red to bring out your personality or choose the navy or grey clothing sprinkled with star dust, definitely make you shine during the company’s annual dinner and dance.

KAEHANA

“All women are beautiful. Kaehana embraces all body types and ages. The brand reinforces that all women are unique and have their own individual take on what looks good on them. Her digital prints say, “Celebrate your inner goddess!”

Singapore Shines at Audi Star Creation 2013

Audi Star Creation, a regional fashion design competition, identifies and nurtures emerging Asian fashion designers. First held in 2010, it’s an event of the annual Asia Fashion Exhange (AFX); the competition is open to aspiring designers between 16 and 35 years who are Asian citizens. Audi Star Creation is spearheaded by the Textile and Fashion Federation Singapore (TaFf) and sponsored by Audi Singapore and supported by fashion house, F J Benjamin.

From left: Haziq Putra (Singapore), Sun Yi Jin (China), Odile Benjamin (RAOUL), Vu Ta Linh (Vietnam)

Temasek Polytechnic student from Apparel Design and Merchandising, Haziq Putra‘s “Pursuit to Freedom” took one of the competition’s three top spots. In addition, the 21-year-old also won the Audi Young Designer Award (AYDA), which is given to the winner whose creation best embodies the Audi design spirit of innovation, technology and progression.

Haziq’s menwear collection featured hand-dyed batik, from which he created a digital print. He also incorporated two distinct Kelantan icons – the Wau Bulan, a giant kite , and the ikan pari, or stingray.

“I thought the collection was very original and I like the fact you could see his design concept of the stingray flow right through. He was creative but not too over the top with progressive design, much like Audi. At the same time, the collection is very well made and seems to be market-ready. I can even see myself in some of his pieces!” commented Jeff Mannering, Audi Singapore’s Managing Director on Haziq’s design.

26-year-old Vietnamese, Vu Ta Linh won the judges over with “The Contour”, a womenwear collection inspired by the Vietnamese rice terraces Ruong Bac Thang in Sapa. Linh graduated from Hanoi London College of Fashion Studies in July 2012, and uses stitching, weaving and embroidery to capture the curves and waves of the Vietnamese heritage.

Bagging the third and final spot was 24-year-old Sun Yi Jin from China, whose womenwear collection drew on the Chinese costumes and handicraft techniques of the 56 ethnic groups in China.

Commenting on her win, judge David Wang, the Vice President of the Textile and Fashion Federation Singapore, said, “What impressed us most was the fact that the collection draws so strongly on history yet manages to come across as modern. That is exactly what we were looking for with this year’s InspirAsian theme – a designer who was able to dig deep into his/her own culture but emerge with something that would fit right in on the streets of New York or Tokyo.”

Each of the three winners will get $10,000 in cash from Audi Singapore, an internship with leading fashion retailer F J Benjamin and the chance to launch a capsule collection at Audi Star Creation 2014.

Bon Appetit, Hippopotamus!

Eat like a hungry hippo with ABR Holdings latest F&B concept at Marina Square! Bon Appetit.

IMG_8526 IMG_8525

After the successful of bringing Swensen’s to our shore, ABR Holdings Limited  has introduced a new casual dining experience in modern French style. Created in Paris in 1968, the Hippopotamus restaurant Grill has gained a strong reputation in France, especially in Paris. Prepared with the widest selections of cut from the well-known Sirloin, Tenderloin and Rib Steak, to the rare Hanger and Skirt Steaks at affordable prices, Hippopotamus is a contemporary restaurant with a relaxed, friendly ambience.

IMG_8448 IMG_8449

Meat lovers alert! Here’s a quick French lesson, “Pour l’amour de la viande” translates to “For the love of meat”. We are lucky to be invited by ABR Holdings for a lunch time food tasting session at Hippopotamus. (Those working near Marina Square, remember to check out their special lunch treats!)

IMG_8495 IMG_8481

Get some greens before you start your main course with the Caesar Salad ($8.90) adorned with chicken, parmesan and an inimitable sauce. Pair it with Hippo’s traditional rendition of French Onion Soup ($8.90) – generously peppered with onions and melted cheese.

IMG_8493 IMG_8502

Try the Hot Goat Cheese Salad ($9.90) – its refined flavour of goat cheese slathered on crisp toast, topped with herbs from Provence and olive oil makes it a sunny, charming starter!

IMG_8500 IMG_8497

Go bold with Escargots ($16.90), an essential item on the French menu. Have it as a starter, this comes as a set of 6, topped with herb butter. Make believe you are in a Parisian diner with Bone Marrow ($11.90), heaving with haute French flavour in these unapologetically rich renditions of French classics.

IMG_8458 IMG_8466

A scrumptious selection of house sauces (Barbecue, Bearnalise, Homemade Thai Chili, Stewed Shallot, Pepper and Roquefort Cheese) is available to accompany every main course ordered, while 6 dishes – French Fries, Potato Gratin, Green Beans, Baked Potato, Ratatouille and Steamed Vegetables provide for a medley of choices on the side.

Skirt Steak Rack of Lamb

Skirt Steak ($18.90) is a cut of beef from the plate of the mule. Long and flat, it is often neglected because it is not known for its tenderness. Rather, it is well-loved for its strong flavour in every cut. Rack of Lamb ($36.90) serves up deliciously tender Australian choice cuts of lamb. Slow- grilled for hours, it makes for a bold, flavourful dish that will leave you hankering for more.

Grilled Game Hen US Pork Chop

The Grilled Game Hen ($21.90) features U.S imported Cornish Game Hen tenderly grilled to fork- tender perfection. Taste the difference with Hippo’s slow- grilled U.S. Pork Chop ($19.90) that is crisp on the outside but exudes a moist, smooth texture on the inside.

IMG_8463 IMG_8478

Blogger friends, Christina from huneyzworld.blogspot.com and Tiffany from missytiffany.com enjoying the beef skewer.

IMG_8465 IMG_8490

For the rib fans, go for the BBQ Ribs ($19.90), a hunky-dory set of luscious pork spare ribs served with barbeque sauce. Grilled King Prawns ($22.90) also make a strong contender on the menu for prawn-lovers. Flavoursome grilled whole king prawns are served atop a bed of fresh greens.

IMG_8489 IMG_8520

To finish off the satisfying meat heavy meal, grab a cup of Chocolate Mousse ($7.90), or go with a French classic, Crème Brulee ($7.90), perfectly torched with cameralized brown sugar encasing a dish of smooth cream with subtle hints of vanilla.

Hippopotamus has also revamped its drinks menu with an assortment of different kinds of new cocktails, and an updated list of beers and wines. Pair your meal with a glass of classic French wine for a boozy gastronomic experience this week!
