Luxe Women – Deluxe Not Just for Women

My body was sore from all the Physical Abuse I received from my personal training. It was god-sent when I was invited to Luxe Women’s Blogger Party. After all my body could do with some tender-loving care and pampering being offered by the award-winning nail-trending salon.

In this present age, manicure and pedicure are no longer the exclusive right of women. More men are jumping into this business of personal grooming to get professional assistance in taking care of their nails. But if you’re an Alpha male and nails treatment is not your kind of pampering, fear not, because Luxe Women’s new outlet at Sembawang offers integrated services for both men and women to enjoy.

Conveniently located at Sembawang MRT, this shop within shop inside Station33 is an one-stop service centre that combines spa, nail care, eye brown services, waxing (for women only), hair styling and massage all in one unisex salon. It is an ideal place for couple living in the north to spend half a day pampering their body and soul together.

Last week, together with male bloggers, Damien and Don, we had the chance to experience i-SPA – soaking our feet in the 7 colour LED Jacuzzi Foot Bath Therapy while our body relax to the tune of the massage chair. The treatment was completed with Aroma-scrub and Mask with comfort and relaxation of a tablet with a range of movies to keep us entertain while the therapist worked on removing dead skin from our feet.

After a quality feet treatment, we were ushered to ZuYue Foot Reflexology where our feet were kneaded by trained therapists who ensured that the pressure on our feet were just right. There is also a tablet attached to every chair and I was watching Captain America while getting the reflexology done. The session was completed with a head and shoulder massage for a holistic relaxation experience.

Fit.Right.In – Challenge in Progress

WANTED: The man in the picture below has been charged with physical abuse infliced on the owner of this blog. Warning: Do not approach him for personal training unless you are committed to improve yourself – to become fitter and healthier; look better with more confidence.

007x - Copy

Pardon me for the lack of blog posts recently as I have been busy getting my fat ass kicked by my personal trainer, Jensen Arabejo from Physical ABuse Fitness Center. Into my third week of training, we did a quick check on my weight and I’m happy with the results although my abs are still not showing.

About my trainer: Jensen is trained to be nurse but his love for fitness and sports led him to become certified physical trainer. As an athlete, he enjoys challenges and extreme sports. His passion in sports and fitness is the reason why he is able to motivate and push his clients for the benefits of reaching their own goals. Prior to working in Singapore, he was based in Macau as a fitness trainer and his expertise includes weight loss & toning, strengthening, weight gain and sports conditioning especially for basketball and swimming.

My training began as once a week, one hour per session work out with Jensen. Each session starts with warm-up exercise follows by two sets of repetitive circuit training. During the week, I also attended the various group classes with Tiffany, because the best way to lose weight is to combine cardiovascular exercises with weights training.

Tiffany and I went for Drums Alive, the latest calorie-burning workout using drum sticks and Swiss balls. The well-coordinated rhythmic class lets us fulfill our rock star fantasy while burning fats at the same time. Besides this unique group exercise, we also attended two classes of Zumba together. The first was conducted by Jasmine who incorporated K-pop songs and dance moves to the work out. For me, the moves were more of an advance level and my two left feet were trying hard to keep up. Thank goodness the Saturday Zumba classes conducted by Ridhuan consists of much simple moves but are of high impact, causing me to perspire more.

What I really love about Physical Abuse Fitness Center are the friendly personal trainers and crowd. Most people who go to Physical Abuse know their personal fitness goal, and the spirit of camaraderie towards health and fitness is very motivating. Even though this boutique gym is not as big as the major fitness chain, it has all the equipments we need and we seldom need to wait in order to use the facilities unlike when I was working out in CF or FF.

Losing weight is a balance between our input and output, simply working out once or twice a week is not sufficient. Diet control is another key area we need to note. During this period of challenge, I cut down on carbohydrates and feed on fish soup or Yong Tau Foo for dinner after work out.

Although every hour of physical training with Jensen feels like eternity, but time does fly by quickly. It’s nearing the end of this Fit Right In challenge. So, who do you think will win this challenge? Check out Tiffany’s blog post here and watch out for the release of result soon!

Fit.Right.In – Challenge Accepted

4 weeks, 4 personal trainings, 2 bloggers but only 1 winner. Who will be the ultimate winner of Physical ABuse fitness center’s Fit Right In Challenge? In this part 1 of 3 series, Malcolm shares his reasons why he embarks on this physical challenge and his confident on winning this get fit assignment.

PhysicalAbusefbcover

Turning three zero next year, I make a personal promise to get fit and look fab before age catches up and my body metabolism rate slows down. My resolution for this year is to get back in shape, but being occupied with studies and blogging at the first half of the year, and now with professional work and writing as my main excuses for not exercising.

It was a wake up call when I received the invitation from Physical ABuse to challenge Tiffany Yong to shape up.

I have not been a stranger to weight loss, in fact during my Basic Military Training (BMT) course I was able to tone up and look fit. Few years ago, through a life coaching project, I was able to lose 7 kg in 7 weeks. Although right now, procrastination and laziness are my biggest hurdles to get rid of my love handles.

physical abuse profile malcolm

The benefits of workout include staying healthy, looking good and feeling confident; as popular meme says, “I don’t workout to be healthy, I do it to look good naked”. Though it may sound NSFW (not safe for work) but it’s still a form of motivation.

physical abuse profile tiffany

Physical intimacy aside, physical training is hard work! When I did the physical assessment and found out that I only need to lose 4.5 kg of fats, I was over-confident.  And during the fitness assessment, I almost fainted after 10 minutes on the step machine.

IMG-20130807-WA0015 IMG-20130807-WA0023

The other concern is that I’m recovering from my left wrist injury. Right now, I’m unable to bend my wrist hence exercises that require pushing motion, like push up, are not recommended.  This gives my personal trainer,  Jenson additional challenge to create a workout that is suitable for me.

Even with these internal and external factors standing in my path, I am determined to win this fat burning challenge. Follow my live tweets from @MalcolmSunny or #FRIChallenge for real time updates about this challenge. Also check out Tiffany’s updates via @tiffanyyongwt and her blog post here.

Keep Calm, Ear Candling and Carry On

Under the encouragement of a friend and a trained ear candling therapist, Gabriel, I decided to give car candling a try. My first thought was, “Is he going to burn a candle into my ear?” Needless to say, my fear soon vanished after Gabriel’s thoughtful explanation on how it is done and the benefits.

ear_candling

What are the benefits?

Benefits of ear candling include relieving tinnitus (ringing in the ears), helping to relieve sinus pain and pressure, removing excess wax build up, assisting with relieving Swimmers’ ear, assisting with headaches, relieving severely itchy ears (often caused by yeast, mould or dairy allergies) and helping to unplug ears (often due to illness).

Ear candling benefits everyone especially people who swim, fly or dive regularly, i.e. swimmers, scuba divers, cabin crew, pilots, etc.

Other potential benefits may include improved lymphatic fluid flow through the body, improved colour perception, a more balanced emotional state and clearer thinking.

It has also been reported that those who partake in ear candling experience an improved sense of taste as well as reduced pressure, which may be present in the ears due to a wax build up or infection. Claims have also been made that they are able to assist with purifying the blood. Others have reported experiencing a relaxing and soothing effect on the mind and body after an ear candling session.

Ear Candling 534993_10151417116030859_172260127_n

How is it done?

Ear candling involves inserting a long, cylindrical candle into the ear and lighting it on the other end. Heat produced from the top of candle helps to draw out excess ear wax and other debris which may be present in the ear canal. This technique must be done by an experienced therapist.

How much does it cost?

Small fees (cash payment only)

1 session: $20,  5 sessions: $80 (30 min per session)

*Strictly by appointment ONLY. For more information and booking, please call Gabriel at 9062 5742

Yoga in the Sky at Mind-Body-Spirit Festival 2013

Last Sunday 12 May 2013, I attended the Mind-Body-Spirit Festival organised by Singapore Flyer in conjunction with Mother’s Day celebration. With the day-pass ticket, there are various classes to choose from and at different venues to provide unique experience for all.

DSC02363 DSC02359

Yoga, pilates, fitness marathon and  mass workout are some of the selection available. Eventually I decided to train my abs and headed for the yoga class held at Bayview Room at level 2.

DSC02360 DSC02364

The YogaDivas CORE workshop was presented by yoga instructor, Sarah Powell from YogaDivas. Yoga is not just about gentle stretching, during the one-hour session, we learned to discover our inner strength and also had fun with arm balances. If you think yoga is just for girls, don’t be misled by the YogaDivas name, there were a couple other guys attending the class with me.

Sarah started the class with relaxation breathing exercise before proceeding to stretching and balancing on our core muscles and arms. Most of the poses were manageable except for a few which were rather challenging. Sarah also demonstrated varied versions of the pose to achieve the desired result without hurting ourselves. After the one hour, I could really feel my abs again!

DSC02383 DSC02377 DSC02394 DSC02402

As I was recovering from my previous yoga class, I met up with the organisers who gladly informed me that they had specially arranged for a workout in the sky for me. Although I was feeling slightly tired but the idea of doing yoga in the sky excited me (click here to read my previous experience with doing yoga inside the capsule).

The special class of Hatha Yoga was presented by Master Ankan Kumar Sarkar from Sky Fitness. Hatha Yoga is the most ancient, complete and popular system of yoga for mental and physical health. It is a science of breathing, purification and synchronization on the physical and mental dimensions. During the two rotations of one hour, we learned the ancient techniques of esanas (postures) and pranayama – good health, peace prosperity, longevity and self-realization.

Doing yoga inside the capsule is an amazing experience. Imagine seeing the Marina Bay district 165 metres above the ground in an upside-down position. The beautiful scenery makes enduring the more challenging postures so much more enjoyable. It is an experience that is not offered everyday.

I would like to thank Singapore Flyer for the lovely invitation and I really hope that can make the Mind-Body-Spirit Festival a yearly event or have more classes of yoga, pilates or fitness workout in the sky so many others can enjoy the unique experience.

My life was in hectic mess since last week, rushing for one place to another, attending events and classes, trying to complete my school assignments while juggling two part-time jobs, I was having difficulty finding space for myself. Hence, I jumped the opportunity when Singapore Flyer invited us for Workout in the Sky last Wednesday – yoga is actually what I need to calm my spirit and find my inner peace.

Despite the massive crowd in the MRT and the early morning downpour, we managed to arrive before 9.30 am to board the capsule for this once in a lifetime experience. After all, it’s not everyday that we get to do yoga at 165-metre above the ground!
