I hate Chinese songs and when given a choice, I would normally sing English songs at karaoke sessions with friends. Besides being linguistically challenged  in Mandarin, very often I feel that Chinese songs are always so melancholic in nature.

But what I do support is originality, creativity and local talent. Coming to its 19th year,  Music Express is an annual songwriting competition organized by the NTU Chinese Society (NTUCS).  The aim of this competition is to provide a platform for dedicated people who are enthusiastic in music, encourage them to express own feeling, views, and ideas via originally-made songs.

This year, besides focusing its scope to Universities and Colleges in Singapore, Music Express introduces a new catagory, targeting all Singaporean below 35, with the ambition to increase the songwriting atmosphere in Singapore.

Here’s a short introduction of the contesters for this year:

iN the Party

I was invited to iN988’s first year anniversary celebration last Friday! iN988.com is an interactive internet ‘live’ shows broadcast station with a crew of international VJs. Broadcasting from their base in Singapore, iN988 has a wide range of programmes catering to the different demographics.

The iN Party was held at an auditorium in the same building as their broadcast station. We were treated to a sumptuous spread of buffet dinner with music performances by artists from Music Dreamer Live! Cafe.

I spotted many old friends, reconnected with new friends and found fresh faces there!

Jen Su (Designer and Owner of SpunkPunkFunk), Issac (fashion blogger for IssacRitz.com), Chiro (blogger of Charismatic Chiro) and Christina (blogger of Huney’Z World) were all there!

The folks at iN988 did a gala style red carpet entry into the auditorium. All the VJs and many guests of honour from the media and entertainment industry were all present.

We were ushered into the auditorium to be treated by various dance and singing items by local and international performing groups.

My favorite VJ is of course, Roger Poon! He is currently hosting two shows: Roger’s Midnight Shows is on every Friday after 12 mn to 2 am on early Sat morning, iN_Gen is on 9 am to 1 pm on every Saturday. I wonder if he needs to sleep?

As we had to leave before the concert ended, we decided to sneak down to level 2 to check out the studio. Lady Luck was kind to me and I managed to have my photos taken with Roger before he rushed back to perform for the concert.

STAR by the Bay

Close to 20,000 people turned out for the Straits Times Appreciates Readers (STAR) Concert held at Gardens by the Bay last Sunday. Readers of Singapore’s daily paper were treated to a concert with popular bands like Korean group 4Minute, American rock band Boys Like Girls as well as Singapore Idol champions Taufik Batisah and Hady Mirza.

Early birds were rewarded with a carnival treat of stilt walkers, jugglers, unicyclists, door gifts from sponsors. One of the highlights for the STAR Carnival was the cosplay costume with characters like Loki (Avengers), Chun Li (Street Fighters), Digimons and other popular anime characters.

My favorite contestants that day were the mother-daughter team dressed up as Chun Li and mini Chun Li. They won 3rd in the group category. Digimons team was crowned winner of the group category. Another hot favorite, Loki, won the best individual category character.

As one of the main sponsors for the STAR Concert, we were invited to be on site to promote our upcoming event. As you can see from our smiley faces, we had a hell lot of fun promoting our Halloween packages.
