I’m going to the Emerald of Borneo!

While the majority population were getting gear up to meet Psy, Carly Rae Jepsen, Justin Bieber and other international stars at the first ever Social Stars Concert, I’m excited about flying off to the Emerald of Borneo and close encounters with the proboscis monkeys tomorrow!

During a recent conversation with a friend, he made this observation after his recent trip to Taipei. “Take away Taipei 101 and the city feels like any other,” he commented. Indeed, for me, most big cities look and feel the same, remove the major landmarks and shopping bazaars, and what’s remaining are the skyscrapers overlooking downtown like security officers guarding a red carpet.

This is why I feel that Brunei is so special to me – offering us a chance to be close to Mother Nature and the great outdoor again. In comparison, Brunei is 5,765 kilometres square while Singapore is only 710 kilometers square, and 70% of its land mass is covered by lush rainforest. Besides oil, I believe clean air is also in abundance at the Emerald of Borneo.

Geographically separated from peninsular Asia by the South China Sea, Brunei lies on Borneo – the 3rd largest island in the world. Brunei occupies only 1% of Borneo, sharing the island with Malaysia’s Sarawak and Sabah, and Indonesia’s province of Kalimantan.

Besides sharing the same currency rate as Singapore and occasionally receiving the Brunei dollars while shopping, I know little about this Southeast Asia neighbour of ours. I made a trip to the library but was unable to find any guidebook specifically for Brunei, which encouraged me to discover more about this mysterious country when I arrive there.

Besides being the home of proboscis monkey, the capital Bandar Seri Begawan is a juxtaposition of water villages with the grand palace, Istana Nurul Iman and majestic mosques as its backdrop. Many of my friend laughed when I show my excitement for Brunei, a country many guys only recognised as the training ground for jungle survival during their military service.

No doubt, a holiday to Brunei is unlike the usual city sightseeing, shopping and eating which we experience in Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok. As a lover of nature, I had been to Mount Kinabalu in Sabah and I am really looking forward to discover what this country of less than half a million population has in store for us.

I have seen the draft itinerary and I am thrilled that we will be staying at different accommodations every night. From the elegant Rizqun International Hotel to the rustic-charmed Ulu-Ulu National Park Resort, and rounding off the trip with a night stay at the majestic Empire Hotel & Country Club, I’m atingle to check out the various facilities of these hotels and resort.

The pre-planned activities include a mixture of culture and outdoor – a night tour of  SOAS mosque and JAME mosque, trekking through Ulu Temburong National Park, a day tour of the water village, relaxing time at Serasa Beach, plus diving, snorkeling and horse riding. With an itinerary is packed with so many stuff to do, we dare to say that a holiday in Brunei is only just about M&M (mosque and museum).

The fun part of this trip is that I will be going with four other bloggers, Andy Storm, Tiffany YongDeenise Glitz and Renzze (click here to read her pre-trip blog post) but I haven’t met any of them before. I’m looking forward to the interesting experiences together.

Special thanks to OMY.SG and Royal Brunei Airlines for sending me there. Royal Brunei Airlines fly to all the major cities in Southeast Asia and East Asia, as well as Dubai, London and Melbourne. They are currently running their 38th anniversary celebration with promotional fares to six destinations. Sales period until 31 May 2013.

Welcome onboard and step up to PARCO next NEXT, where young designers’ vivid imaginations meet fashion fantasies, creating beautiful manifestations from myriad points of references.

On Saturday 18 May 2013, local fashion label, LION EARL invited us to join them on a fashion journey of discovery: from outer space to sailing on the high seas, from plain basics to Peranakan-inspired digital prints. From boxy, airy shapes to body-contour dressing and androgyny. From ghetto chic to the streets of Asia. We witness the launch of PARCO next NEXT latest collection.

Rêvasseur

“Run away and join the navy to sail the seven seas. From cute manga sailors to sexy sirens bidding “ships ahoy!”, Revasseur’s nautical inspiration has everything from naughty to nice!”

Comments: My first reaction to this collection by Revasseur was “oh, how cute!”, it was as if the characters from the famous Japanese manga ‘One Piece’ coming to live on the runway. As we all know Singapore is an island and what other way to bring out the sunny heritage of our country through this nautical-inspired fashion.

Coupé-Cousu

Comments: Have you heard of the mission to launch humans onto Mars by 2023? It’s okay if you are not a fan of astronomy because this new collection by Coupe-Cousu offers menswear from both the bold and conservative. Opt for the bright red to bring out your personality or choose the navy or grey clothing sprinkled with star dust, definitely make you shine during the company’s annual dinner and dance.

I can totally see myself spending a whole day at the store and walking away with my pocket empty but heart full of joy.

From left: Haziq Putra (Singapore), Sun Yi Jin (China), Odile Benjamin (RAOUL), Vu Ta Linh (Vietnam)

Temasek Polytechnic student from Apparel Design and Merchandising, Haziq Putra‘s “Pursuit to Freedom” took one of the competition’s three top spots. In addition, the 21-year-old also won the Audi Young Designer Award (AYDA), which is given to the winner whose creation best embodies the Audi design spirit of innovation, technology and progression.

Haziq’s menwear collection featured hand-dyed batik, from which he created a digital print. He also incorporated two distinct Kelantan icons – the Wau Bulan, a giant kite , and the ikan pari, or stingray.

“I thought the collection was very original and I like the fact you could see his design concept of the stingray flow right through. He was creative but not too over the top with progressive design, much like Audi. At the same time, the collection is very well made and seems to be market-ready. I can even see myself in some of his pieces!” commented Jeff Mannering, Audi Singapore’s Managing Director on Haziq’s design.

26-year-old Vietnamese, Vu Ta Linh won the judges over with “The Contour”, a womenwear collection inspired by the Vietnamese rice terraces Ruong Bac Thang in Sapa. Linh graduated from Hanoi London College of Fashion Studies in July 2012, and uses stitching, weaving and embroidery to capture the curves and waves of the Vietnamese heritage.

Bagging the third and final spot was 24-year-old Sun Yi Jin from China, whose womenwear collection drew on the Chinese costumes and handicraft techniques of the 56 ethnic groups in China.

Commenting on her win, judge David Wang, the Vice President of the Textile and Fashion Federation Singapore, said, “What impressed us most was the fact that the collection draws so strongly on history yet manages to come across as modern. That is exactly what we were looking for with this year’s InspirAsian theme – a designer who was able to dig deep into his/her own culture but emerge with something that would fit right in on the streets of New York or Tokyo.”

Each of the three winners will get $10,000 in cash from Audi Singapore, an internship with leading fashion retailer F J Benjamin and the chance to launch a capsule collection at Audi Star Creation 2014.

Trieste. Napoli. Nespresso. What else?

DSC02133

Once again Nespresso has continued to surprise and delight its Club Members and coffee lovers through the launch of two unique favours (Trieste and Napoli) named after the two Italian cities, Trieste and Naples, at Savour 2013.

DSC02107 DSC02139

The Nespresso Trieste Limited Edition Grand Cru is a reflection of the rich and varied cultural experience that the city of Trieste offers. Trieste sits at the crossroads of Italian, Germanic and Slavic cultures. Coffee in Trieste can be taken with milk, without milk, long or short. The inhabitants of Trieste have even created their own specific language around their coffee – “nero” is an expresso. “capo” is with a dash of milk and coffee served in a glass rather than the usual china cup is called “in b”.

The Trieste Limited Edition with a delicate blend of Arabica beans is characterised by a rounded texture with notes of chocolate and fresh hazelnuts. Refreshingly fruity notes bring out an exceptional subtlety in this coffee. Limited Edition Trieste has an intensity level of 9 and is best enjoyed as a ristretto (25ml). For true coffee and milk lovers, the Limited Edition Trieste reveals another aspect of its character when served as a Cappuccino.

DSC02138 DSC02119

Naples is a behemoth of culture in the history of Europe, and a vibrant city in the South of Italy. Coffee has a a special place here, since the end of the 17th century, it has been synonymous with hospitality, friendship and precious moments with family. Neapolitans like to take their coffee only in one way: short and dark – a sharp, jolt to the senses. Naples is also the city where the first domestic appliance to prepare coffee was invented; the caffettiera napoletana.

The Nespresso Napoli Limited Edition is a blend of Arabica beans with a hint of Robusta. Bold and assertive with a syrupy body, it is characterised by refined smokey notes. Its aroma has scents of dried black leaves. Limited Edition Napoli has an intensity level of 11 and is best enjoyed as a ristretto (25ml). For an even more authentic taste, enjoy it in an even shorter cup than a ristretto (15-20ml), and it’s traditionally drank with sugar.

To experience the authentic tasting moment for these Limited Edition coffees, Nespresso has created a dedicated box set, containing a sleeve of Trieste and of Napoli, along with four cups and saucers designed in the colours of these Limited Edition coffees.

To win a set of this Limited Edition box set with a sleeve of Trieste and Napoli, simply email to me at sunny_creationz@hotmail.com and tell me what is your favorite coffee. Contest closes 15 May 2013. Winner will be notified by 17 May 2013.

UT 2013 POP-UP!

DSC02318

On Friday, 3 May 2013 UNIQLO launched the UT POP-UP! Singapore held at 72-13 and transformed the two-level rice warehouse and cultural relic into a fashion and musical stage for the night, where a mega display installation of over 1,000 UTs in 400 designs took centre stage. Guests also had fun posing at the UT Camera Booth, where their animated photos were uploaded on the global UT website. Throughout the night, there were entertainment from local artists and free flow of champagne for the guests.

From chic formal wear to casual daily , from loungewear to underwear, UNIQLO has something for everyone. I have been a fan of UNIQLO especially with their UT which often collaborates with various brands for witty designs. It’s summer all year round in Singapore so T-shirts are particularly useful and have become a staple dress code for most people living in Singapore.

DSC02324 DSC02314 DSC02327 DSC02328

One of the highlights of the launch is the showcase of UNIQLO x NOISE Singapore collaboration. Young artists and photographers had the opportunity to showcase their original works while budding musicians rock on through the weekend long event. There were also limited edition t-shirts designed by Noise artists for sale.

My favorite design was The Singapore Dream by local illustrator, Lim Qi Xuan. You can see more of her work at http://www.qimmyshimmy.com

“The Fresh Grad Cat is a SIngaporean stereotype that has just left school and is entering the industry. After slogging through 16 years in the Singapore education system, it better all be worth it. With his shiny new degree and hungry for the job that pays the best, he does not know what exactly lies ahead. But he is going where the money goes, definitely! Someone’s got to save up to afford that COE,” said Qi Xuan.

Minnie meets Mickey on UT. Eve from Wall-E and UP! the movie are some of the upcoming designs.

DSC02344 DSC02347

The new series of UT with Toy Story characters like Buzz Lightyear, Mr Potato Head, Woody and the green, three-eyed rubber alien, the Little Green Men/Man.

DSC02346 DSC02342

Rather artistic looking design of Monster Inc. and the ever popular Snoopy from Peanuts.

New Yorker Keith Haring‘s art is also expressed onto the new UT! New designs will be available in store but in different batches so make sure you check out the UNIQLO outlets regular and look out for the new shipment.

Shades of Peranakan

With a history dated as far back as 1900s, the Peranakan Association today is run by a group of passionate volunteers. The original association was the Straits Chinese British Association (SCBA), formed on 17 August 1900 with Baba Tan Jiak Kim as its president. Today, the Peranakan Association (Singapore) regularly organises events, talks and other functions to engage fellow Peranakans and to spread the unique Strait Chinese culture to anyone who is curious to get a taste of truly Singapore.

Besides owning her own fashion studio, Jen also does make-up, styling, photography and consultation. So in fact SpunkPunkFunk is an one-stop service center for those looking for the witty look with a personal charm.
