Wine Tips from Wanderwine.com

There is a new online wine retail in town! The guys at Wanderwine.com may have just the right formula to become the next Airbnb or Uber of the wine industry – affordable, accessible and advice – the 3 key ingredients that every consumer needs, whether you are a new drinker or a seasoned wine appreciator.

Offering an initial inventory of 39 labels handpicked from Australia, Chile, France, Italy, New Zealand, Spain and Switzerland, perhaps missing only South Africa or U.S.A., I believe there is a bottle for everyone at Wanderwine. I love these good people because they believed that great wine and the education around it shall be accessible to everyone in Singapore, and being an online company enable them to do that!

IMG_2797

They focus a lot on quality, both in the selection of the bottles, and also in the content on the online shop. For wine curated by their sommeliers, the consumers get high definition pictures of the bottles, the story of the wine, extensive tasting notes, food pairing suggestions, serving and drinkability notes, and even the pictures of the vineyards in the area of the wines. It is something that nobody would not be able to do in a retail shop without a tremendous amount of physical space.

IMG_2794

The online element also allows more freedom and creativity for their sommeliers team as they can easily publish fun or educational articles to audience and share their knowledge about wine!

Wine selection and wine pairing are all about: 1. knowing yourself (your taste bud, your preference, etc), 2. knowing what you plan to cook or order for your meal, 3. lastly, it’s about fun, wine pairing is about trial and error. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in the past before I realize that I really prefer a light red like Pinot Noir or light / sweet white like Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Moscato.

Pairing Asian cuisine with wine is a lot of fun, due to the diversity of cultures, usually requiring both roundness and freshness in wines to soften out the intense flavours and spices used in cooking. A well-chilled, crisp, young and fruity white like the Marlborough Seresin Pinot Gris would go beautifully with Tuna Tataki, Ponzu, Smoked Enoki, onion, or Puffed Rice. On the other hand, salted dishes, like the smoked salmon, or even salted egg yolk prawns will pair well with whites like the Amigne de Vetroz, La Danse des Etoiles, which boasts of good acidity and gentle tropical fruits notes.

IMG_2808

For red meats, try pairing the lighter, less intense braises such as duck or even cumin-spiced lamb leg with a Shiraz, such as the Two Hands Bellas Garden, bringing in a long finish of blistering yet silky, cushioned flavours. A red with an earthy palate and savoury characters is recommended for the other red meat selections. Paired with an interesting love story to “chase away the melancholy”, the Chateau Chasse Spleen from Bordeaux, France would serve as a good pick.

For a new person to red wine, the recommendation will be a Pinot Noir, which is lighter on the tannin. A good choice will be the Mercurey Premier Cru Clos des Barraults, which is hand harvested from 40 years old vines, ensuring the highest grape quality selection. A brilliant ruby colour coupled with a rich, “masculine” palate, this is sure to be a crowd pleaser. IMG_2827

With wanderwine, you can expect to save between up to 40% off the usual retail price, while still enjoying the highest delivery and service quality. They do not have to carry the heavy weight of retail rental fee and thanks to that, they are able to pass those savings on! For example, the Bordeaux Haut Medoc Chateau Chasse Spleen that they have in their inventory would be around $135 in a brick & mortar retail shop, compared to $83 on Wanderwine.

Moreover, there is no minimum spending for delivery, but a delivery fee of S$16 is added on your purchase.  Purchases above S$75 enjoy free delivery, and Wanderwine sends your order to your door step by the next working day.

Essentially, Wanderwine is really about pairing good bottles of wine with people who may not have known about them earlier. A good bottle of wine is a powerful tool; it can pull a party together, create enduring friendships and craft memories that last for a lifetime. Wanderwine is a reflection of the love for travel and discovery, all wrapped up in one package.

Chinese New Year is just around the corner. Traditionally, Spring is the time where people get rid of the old and replace with new. Read on to find out how you can enjoy discount when you purchase during this festive period.

Set up by three friends with experience in sourcing, marketing and logistic. Jada, one of the co-founders, is a fashion designer and General Manager of a fashion retailer serving international markets. Her previous experience in furnishing her new place abroad made her realise that shopping for furniture could be a real headache, and constantly questioned, “Why can’t I get beautiful furniture with good quality at affordable prices?”

Leveraging on e-commerce technology that makes online shopping popular in Singapore, homemakers can now get designer furniture at the convenience of a click. The online model has also made it possible to offer prices 20-40% lower than other designer furniture brands by reducing overheads such as salesman commission, showroom and manpower costs, and by getting products directly from manufacturers.

My Christmas Wish List 2013

Season’s greeting everyone! It’s the most wonderful time of the year and especially so this year as I have finally completed the major projects at my new job. Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas, it’s the time of the year when we gets invited to parties and boozing and worry about presents to bring for gift exchange.

For my company, we have Christmas tradition. Each of us are given a piece of paper to write down 3 gift choices, drop it in the bowl and pick the colleague whom we will help to fulfill his/her wish. But if your budget is bigger than mine, you may want to consider these gift ideas:

DSC00003

For the fashionista, select from Kapok Tools range of quintessential bags and accessories. Kapok is a showcase of brands and their Holiday 2013 and Spring Summer 2014 collections are a juxtaposition of fashion, lifestyle, art – Mismo, Pijama, Sandqvist, Crash Baggage and Seventy Eight Percent.

My personal favorite is the Back to Old School collection (from S$605 onwards) from Seventy Eight Percent. For their full range, head down to Kapok Tools store located at TANGS Orchard, level 4 or Robinsons Orchard, level 4.

DSC00005

For those who know beauty is not just skin deep, my recommendation this season will be the skincare range from Swiss brand, Skincode and local boutique skincare brand, The Skin Pharmacy. Other great gift ideas are SK-II MEN Starter Kit and Rehab London’s range of skincare products with natural ingredients.

For someone with sensitive skin like me, ensuring the face is well-hydrated is important – to prevent bacteria growth causing acne. Formulated with Vitamin C, Vitamin E, CM-Glucan, Hydrolite-5 and Rice Starch, the 24 hour Cell Energizer Cream (S$88 for 50ml) is a star performer that hydrates and fights the signs of premature aging by stimulating cell renewal process and skin defence mechanism.

DSC00893Skincode products are suitable for sensitive skin as they are 100% free from preservatives, artificial fragrances, animal derivatives and artificial colours. When I was undergoing fractional laser skin resurfacing last two months, I was very selective of the products to use and I found that the 24 hour Cell Energizer Cream aided me during the down time after laser resurfacing. Skincode products can be found at Guardian Plus located at Ngee Ann City #B2-15/23 (Takashimaya S.C.)

Most of us are usually in a morning rush, and I am no different. My skin care routine in the morning consists of cleansing and moisturizing, but due to the down time after laser resurfacing, sun protect becomes an integrated part of my morning skin regime.

My friend passed me a bottle of The Skin Pharmacy’s Natural Sunscreen (S$54.90 for 50g) which suits my personal liking. The sunscreen is light and easily absorb by my skin to give the protection from the harmful UV rays. The Skin Pharmacy also provides personalised products and consultancy amongst the services they offer at their 3 retail locations.

Festive feasting can be healthy. Besides boosting our skin with moisture and protecting it from the sun, healthy puddings such as AmaSoy Japanese Soy Puddings are good choice for any house or office parties. Enhanced with collagen and omega3 (DHA), AmaSoy’s puddings (S$2 each) are known for their beautifying properties and health benefits such as boosting brain function, enhancing heart health and lowering triglycerides.

Though I have to make a note here that I am still unsure if collagen’s beautifying benefits are best consumed or applied directly onto our skin, I simply love this dessert as a tasty and nutritious alternative. AmaSoy outlets can be found in 6 locations island-wide.

What better way to end the year with celebration and partying, better still turn your office or house into a makeshift lounge or club with UE BOOM speakers from Logitech and Australia’s Hardys Wine by William Hardy.

Image from engadget.com

Image from engadget.com

UE BOOM is a social music player, a wireless speaker that offers 360-degree sound in a battery-powered device. It’s specially developed acoustic skin is water and stain resistant. Simply placed two UE BOOMs at different corners of the room and connect wireless with the free UE BOOM app (available for iOS and Andriod) and get ready to party.

UE BOOM is available at major retailers and leading electronic IT stores at recommended retail price of S$299. For music, upload Michael Buble’s Christmas album for easy listening. 🙂

But not party is complete without boozing. Personally I prefer wine as the healthier choice to other alcoholic beverages. Drinking wine in moderation can help to cure a wide range of ailments such as lethargy and diarrhea. Aged in French and American oak, Hardys Shiraz (S$37 per bottle from Cold Storage) is full bodied with plum, blueberry, blackberry, vanilla and clove spice lending their piquant flavours.

Unfinished bottle of red wine can also be used to make Spanish cocktail, Sangria. Pour the remaining bottle into a jug (you can mix different types of red wine) and add chopped fruits such as orange, apple, berries, grapes, kiwi. Wrap it up with cling film and let the flavour of the fruits diffuse into the wine.

With fashion, beauty, health and fun in check, it will be good tidings and great joy this Christmas! I’m really excited about this December as I have been selected as one of the five official bloggers for Marina Bay Countdown 2014. Look out as I will be sharing more about this end of the year celebration in town as well as my long overdue travel writing on my trip to New Zealand.

Icy Cool Shave

It’s confession time. Truth be told, I’m not a fan of electronic shaver. When serving my full-time national service some years ago, my mom gave me a dry shaver as a means to save time. The result was red, itchy rashes on my upper lip and chin. From then onward, I swore never to engage in dry shaving again.

1376638_705990049429000_8811624_n 1376586_705989996095672_1380168338_n

Attending Procter & Gamble (P&G) launch of the new Braun CoolTec last month, I learnt that most men have sensitive skin and are very selective of the shaver they choose and the grooming regime. Some men would rather skip shaving at together due to skin sensitivity.

But thanks to the revolutionary technology, Braun CoolTec is the world’s first dry shaver specially engineered to deliver an outstanding shaving performance for men with sensitive skin. Designed to take the heat out of shaving, it reduces shaving irritation including burning, itching, redness and skin tension.

Sounds too good to be true? Well, I was initially doubtful even after attending the preview. The secret element in the CoolTec is Braun’s innovative Thermo-Electric-Cooling technology (TEC). While most shavers allow warmth to build up in the head of the shaver, CoolTec’s innovative aluminium cooling bar actively cools down the skin during the shaving process. Check out the review from ElectricShaverGuide for more details.

Two models of Braun CoolTec, CT4s and CT5cc will be available in Singapore from 1 November 2013 at all major electrical chain stores, departmental stores, selected hypermarkets and indepedent electrical stores. Recommended retail pricesare $289 for CT4s and $369 for CT5cc.

Luxe Women – Deluxe Not Just for Women

My body was sore from all the Physical Abuse I received from my personal training. It was god-sent when I was invited to Luxe Women’s Blogger Party. After all my body could do with some tender-loving care and pampering being offered by the award-winning nail-trending salon.

IMG_7428

In this present age, manicure and pedicure are no longer the exclusive right of women. More men are jumping into this business of personal grooming to get professional assistance in taking care of their nails. But if you’re an Alpha male and nails treatment is not your kind of pampering, fear not, because Luxe Women’s new outlet at Sembawang offers integrated services for both men and women to enjoy.

IMG_7439 IMG_7377 2

Last week, together with male bloggers, Damien and Don, we had the chance to experience i-SPA – soaking our feet in the 7 colour LED Jacuzzi Foot Bath Therapy while our body relax to the tune of the massage chair. The treatment was completed with Aroma-scrub and Mask with comfort and relaxation of a tablet with a range of movies to keep us entertain while the therapist worked on removing dead skin from our feet.

IMG_7392 2 IMG_7395

After a quality feet treatment, we were ushered to ZuYue Foot Reflexology where our feet were kneaded by trained therapists who ensured that the pressure on our feet were just right. There is also a tablet attached to every chair and I was watching Captain America while getting the reflexology done. The session was completed with a head and shoulder massage for a holistic relaxation experience.

IMG_7410 IMG_7408 IMG_7411

For a limited period only, ZuYue Foot Reflexology is offering 60-minute foot massage at $25nett. Normal rate for foot massage is $28 for 40 minutes and body massage is $28 for 30 minutes. Lion Earl Roars at Nation Pride

What would you design if you are given the task to come up with the new collection of Singapore Pride? 21 PARCO next NEXT designers took on the challenge, using the most basic staple found in everyone’s wardrode, to present a limited edition t-shirt that represent their interpretation of this nation.

It was a pre-birthday party like no one, as I was treated to a night of fashion show, music, champagne and nostalgic bite size treats at the launch of Nation Pride at PARCO next NEXT on 2 August 2013. Furthering the theme of all things local, retro Singaporean treats were served by dolled up Snack Studs and Candy Chicks.

“We are celebrating National Day with Pride and Passion. Our young emerging designers came up with an exclusive Tee, inspired by our great Nation. For the first time, 6 of our PARCO next NEXT alumni designers are also invited to show along with the current designers. The cool and eternally hip T-shirt best symbolizes Singapore Style!” said Mr David Wang, Project Advisor of PARCO next NEXT and Chairman of the Designers and Retailers Group, Textile and Fashion Federation, (Singapore) (TaFf).

Using white, the color of purity, clarity and virtue. The white cotton top from Lion Earl is inspired from the rectangular outline of the flag with the addition of cut-out sleeves. Designed for the modern woman, one who is strong, capable and confident, the feel of this top portrays a slight military and armor-shell like look to celebrate Her growth throughout the years.

“Singapore to us is a women with strong determination that will keep going forward. She is our home and shelter from which we grew along with her throughout the years.” said Lionel Low, Creative Director of Lion Earl.

Other uniquely Singaporean designs from the Nation Pride 2013 Collection include:

The iconic Merlion is reinterpreted on an embellished T-shirt by Foreword. 20:TwoThree and KaeHana took a trip down memory lane by re-imagining the Good Morning towel and White Rabbit Milk Candy (respectively) from our childhood. Mash-Up once again displayed their distinctive sense of humor with a hand-drawn map of local hunts.

WSDM’s black T-shirt in camouflage print is inspired by the designer’s days in National Service and evenodd’s T-shirt reflects the various Singapore landmarks from the new (Marina Bay Sands) to the heritage (Kampong Glam & HDB, etc).

Singapore Blog Awards mark MalcolmSunny.com 1st Year Anniversary

Last year, under the encouragement of a friend, Darren Ng I registered my previous blog malxc.livejournal.com for the Singapore Blog Awards. Needless to say, I didn’t even manage to get shortlisted as a finalist for any category.  Unsatisfied with just ranting about personal issues I faced, I started MalcolmSunny.com to scribble my happy thoughts.

1044150_10151584467849584_839616091_n

A year on, blogging has certainly opened up a lot of opportunities for me. To begin with I got to know many friends. I remembered meeting Christina and Jeremy during last year’s Singapore Twitter Frenzy at Wave House, Sentosa which shaped my thinking of blogging. Previously I had always viewed my blog as a personal online journal for me to share my feelings with friends.

My interest in lifestyle blogging started while I doing marketing for Singapore Flyer and studying part-time at SIM University. Initially started out as a channel for me to hone my writing skills, blogging has become an integrated part of my life and a passion now. It has opened up more opportunities for networking, invitations to exclusive product launches and previews as well as trips overseas.

Thanks to Omy.sg, I was given the opportunity to experience Brunei and it was during that trip that I got to know Karen, Andy, Tiffany and Deenise. Besides catching up like Bruneian bloggers, we also exchanged tips on blogging and social media.

I’m very proud of my travel mates. In fact, all four of them were the finalists for this year’s Singapore Blog Awards. Karen and Deenise were also nominated for several categories.

Held at Shanghai Dolly, I spotted familiar faces and friends like Smith Leong, William Tan, Elrica, Mint Leong, Regina Chow, Joey Ong, Darren Sim, Hong Peng and Tse Lyn who were the finalists for the main and special categories for this year’s Singapore Blog Awards. Blogger friends like Joyce, Valentine, Colin and Damien were there to cheer them on too. Luke and Shirley were also the finalists but I didn’t manage to spot them.

It was a hot and sunny afternoon when we arrived at London Bar (55 Boat Quay, Singapore 049844). I love the idea that the media event was held at this specially chosen venue, after all this label of men’s skin care originated from the UK. At the entrance, we were greeted by two shirtless models which actually made the warm day even hotter, and sent an endorphin rush for Tiffany Yong and I.

+Rehab London is the brainchild of celebrity hair and make-up artist Lisa Hilton. Founder Lisa Hilton wants to develop a label of skin care that would appeal to the everyday real man, and at the same time promotes an environmentally-friendly lifestyle. Having worked with many male celebrities, Lisa realised that there wasn’t any natural skincare products that could relieve the damaged skin of her male clients, and hence +Rehab London was born.

Using all-natural ingredients such as anti-ageing Rooibos extract and healing Ginseng, it’s no wonder that British celebrities such as Russell Brand, Robert Pattinson and Simon Cowell have all given their stamp of approval.

Brought into Singapore by Natural and Free Living Pte Ltd, set up by sisters Monika and Yuanita Tjia who left the corporate world in pursuit of their passion to share the benefits of using natural products, good skin care and grooming regime. The company also pledge to contribute back to society, for every product sold, S$1 will be donated to the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) to promote environmental responsibility.

During the event, +Rehab London also unveiled their new spokesperson for Singapore. Former reality TV contestant, Howard Lo from Eye for a Guy 2 (2005) was appointed the brand ambassador.  Howard is a true representation of +Rehab London’s target consumer – a man who wears many hats: a husband, tech blogger for ZDNet Asia and restaurateur in Singapore and Indonesia.

The line consists of six products vital to any man’s skincare regime: Scrub Up Daily Detox, Calm Balm, Cold Turkey Shaving Gel, Morning Glory, No Shine, and Revive Survive. I’ve been addicted to the products ever since I received their sample kit at the event couple of weeks ago.

I’ve been using the Men’s Scrub Up Daily Detox on alternate days to get my skin free of dust and to complete my skin care regime, I apply the Revive Survive (anti-fatigue cream) for a refreshing touch.

Ready for a Boozy Good Time at Beerfest Asia 2013?

Thirsty? BEERFEST ASIA returns to Singapore for its 5th edition with promise of more beers, beverages, bands and banter.

Screen shot 2013-06-11 at PM 11.52.13

Block the dates, bring your date and head over to Marina Promenade (the F1 tracks behind Singapore Flyer) from 13 to 16 June 2013 for a jolly good time at Beerfest Asia 2013. Last year I had a wonderful chill out with my former colleagues (click here to see my blog post for Beerfest Asia 2012). This year, expect more than 300 types of beer from all over the world, live stage performances, a comedy club, beer auctions and tasting workshops. The organisers promise a distinct experience packed with great entertainment, drinks and food!

Every year, without fail, Beerfest Asia will introduce new beers to Singapore. This year, look out for new varieties such as the UK’s Hollows Ginger Beer (4.0% ABV) brewed with Chinese ginger root and German beer EKU 28, with a full-bodied malt aroma and one of the strongest beers in the world at 11% ABV. If you crave for a dessert beer, be sure to check out the new flavours of fruit beers from Taiwan Beer.

DSC03084

Besides being able to purchase bottled beer at special prices, tasting beers before purchase, and sampling beers new to either the festival or the market, ticket holders can learn how beer is made and try brewing it yourself at home at the new Craft Beer Experience section and even purchase a beer brewing kit home.

“We started this festival to raise the profile and appreciation of beer, and a significant part of the appreciation is understanding the process by which beer is made,” says Festival Director Edward Chia. “This is the only festival that not only makes this process highly interactive and entertaining, but also brings hundreds of the world’s best beers to you in one location.”

This year, the festival adds a new fourth marquee, Whisky & Wine Lounge, to its line up with a range of premium and limited edition products on offer and tasting from exhibitors, Cornerstone Wines and Beam Global.

Killer Queen

Entertainment is also one of the main highlights of this beer festival. After all, Timbre (the parent company of Beerfest Asia) is known for its booze and music. This year, be entertained by international tribute bands like Killer Queen, The Australian Guns’N’Roses Show, The Fortunate Sons, Melbourne’s premier Creedance Clearwater Revival (CCR)/Fogerty Tribute band and a host of the best of Singapore’s local bands, including Shagies and 53A.

Australian Guns and Roses Show 1 The Fortunate Sons

Also raising the bar on entertainment this year are Comedy Club Asia acts Sons of Singapore, a local comedy trio who were top performers at last year’s “Stand Up For Singapore” and a hit at Beerfest Asia 2012. The trio will be joined by international talents Tom Rhodes (USA), Stephen Grant (UK) and Steve Allison (AUS). Hosted by the popular and multi-linguistic comedic talent Jonathan Atherton, there is no better combination of award-winning wit, energy, intellect and absurdity. DJs from Power 98 will also be there on Friday, 14 June 2013 to entertain patrons of the festival.
