New Contenders Storm Ramen Champion Bugis+

Last Thursday, Ramen Champion at Bugis+ welcomed their 3 new ramen chefs with a grand promotion of 100 bowls of ramen and 50% off throughout the day. An impressive queue lined up along level 4 of Bugis+ waited anxiously for the store to be opened on 4 July 2013.

It’s reality television in real life. Every year, this popular Japanese food venue will invite some of the best Ramen masters and chefs in Japan to Singapore for a stint of one year. Their goal is to impress the diners with their scrumptious and authentic taste of Japan and influence the customers to vote for them.

Despite being popular among its followers, in June 2013, Ramen Champion bid farewell to Menya Iroha, Tai-sho-ken and Aoyama and welcome three new contenders – Muso, Buta God and Menban Yamagishi Kazuo on 1 July 2013.

MENBAN YAMAGISHI KAZUO is named after the legendary inventor of Tsukemen (dipping noodles) – Kazuo Yamagishi is given the title “Master of Ramen”. This shop is opened by his successor who follows Yamagishi’s secret recipe but with his new style. Probably the closest to Tai-sho-ken’s ramen so if you miss it, do try it and compare.

MUSO is the No.1 Ramen Champion 2012 (Hong Kong). This unrivaled chef with outlets in Tokyo and Hong Kong comes to Singapore for a new challenge. Chef Masaaki Kawamura’s ramen broth holds plenty of pork fat, which makes it rich and unique in flavor.

1016226_567408076673925_321703347_n

Brave, new contender BUTA GOD specializes in pork ramen. Chef Mamoru Kanaya matches sliced marinated pork belly and poached egg to create the perfect combination of the slightly sweet Tonkotsu broth. Try the Extra Pork Ramen to satisfy your stomach.

Ramen Champion held a grand promotion on 4 July 2013 offering free bowls of ramen to the first 100 customers. Needless to say, queuing is one of our nation’s favourite pastime and when there is free food there is bound to have a large crowd.

When I reached Bugis+ level 4 that morning the queue had extended to Crystal Jade HK Café. And I heard from the restaurant manager that some people were in the queue as early as 9 o’clock. (Did they think it’s free ramen for breakfast?)

These are six ramens given out for free (100 bowls) and 50% throughout the day:

Ikkousha: Ajitama Ramen – S$13.50

Gantetsu: HOKKAIDO Tonkotsu Ramen – S$11.00

Buta God Tonkotsu: Tonkotsu Sukiyaki Ramen – S$12.00

Menban Yamgishi Kazuo: Ajitama Ramen – S$12.50

Muso Ajitama Cha Cha Ramen – S$13.00

Bario: Ajitama Ramen – S$14.50

The prices listed are before the discount. For me, I choose BARIO’s Ajitamen Ramen because I feel it’s the most value for money for this promotion. I also had a taste of the two champions – MUSO and IKKOUSHA.

I love the new set of Ramen Champion’s posters which look like some kind of ramen manga adapted into a movie promotional posters.

Singapore Blog Awards mark MalcolmSunny.com 1st Year Anniversary

Last year, under the encouragement of a friend, Darren Ng I registered my previous blog malxc.livejournal.com for the Singapore Blog Awards. Needless to say, I didn’t even manage to get shortlisted as a finalist for any category.  Unsatisfied with just ranting about personal issues I faced, I started MalcolmSunny.com to scribble my happy thoughts.

1044150_10151584467849584_839616091_n

A year on, blogging has certainly opened up a lot of opportunities for me. To begin with I got to know many friends. I remembered meeting Christina and Jeremy during last year’s Singapore Twitter Frenzy at Wave House, Sentosa which shaped my thinking of blogging. Previously I had always viewed my blog as a personal online journal for me to share my feelings with friends.

My interest in lifestyle blogging started while I doing marketing for Singapore Flyer and studying part-time at SIM University. Initially started out as a channel for me to hone my writing skills, blogging has become an integrated part of my life and a passion now. It has opened up more opportunities for networking, invitations to exclusive product launches and previews as well as trips overseas.

Thanks to Omy.sg, I was given the opportunity to experience Brunei and it was during that trip that I got to know Karen, Andy, Tiffany and Deenise. Besides catching up like Bruneian bloggers, we also exchanged tips on blogging and social media.

I’m very proud of my travel mates. In fact, all four of them were the finalists for this year’s Singapore Blog Awards. Karen and Deenise were also nominated for several categories.

Held at Shanghai Dolly, I spotted familiar faces and friends like Smith Leong, William Tan, Elrica, Mint Leong, Regina Chow, Joey Ong, Darren Sim, Hong Peng and Tse Lyn who were the finalists for the main and special categories for this year’s Singapore Blog Awards. Blogger friends like Joyce, Valentine, Colin and Damien were there to cheer them on too. Luke and Shirley were also the finalists but I didn’t manage to spot them.

Buoy Up with Airs & Graces at Millenia Walk

Defying the conventional expectations of private art exhibitions, Art Stage Singapore transforms Millenia Walk into an instant contemporary public art museum, offering a unique shopping experience to buoy up the much-awaited holiday and shopping season.

DSC02982a

Last Thursday, I attended the VIP reception of the Airs and Graces exhibition at Millenia Walk. This special art exhibition, which runs from 1 June to 7 July, is co-presented by Art Stage Singapore and Millenia Walk, featuring an impressive cast of renowned international and regional artists, including Singapore artist Sai Hua Kua.

Graced by Dick Lee as the guest-of-honour, attendees at the cocktail reception were treated to ‘live’ art exhibition, sand art performance and lots of ‘bubbles’.

“We are delighted to partner the Art Stage Singapore in the ‘Airs & Graces’ exhibition. This engaging exhibition demonstrates our continued support towards developing a vibrant contemporary art scene here in Singapore. We certainly look forward to sharing and celebrating the inspiring experience with all our visitors at Millenia Walk,” said Mr Tan Boon Tuck, Senior Vice-President of Millenia Private Limited.

“Designed by Pritzker Architectural Prize Laureate Philip Johnson, the inviting and spacious interior of Millenia Walk is ideal for a wide range of creative interactions and installations. This enables us to create a truly enriching experience for our visitors to enhance the premier lifestyle experience as opposed to just another sales promotion,” added Ms Esther Teo, Vice-President, Advertising and Promotions of Millenia Private Limited.

DSC02949

“It is our great pleasure to work with Millenia Walk to deliver an art project which can extend our reach to the local audience and transform the space into an instant museum for fun and discovery,” commented Mr Lorenzo Rudol, Fair Director of Art Stage Singapore.

Ready for a Boozy Good Time at Beerfest Asia 2013?

Thirsty? BEERFEST ASIA returns to Singapore for its 5th edition with promise of more beers, beverages, bands and banter.

Screen shot 2013-06-11 at PM 11.52.13

Block the dates, bring your date and head over to Marina Promenade (the F1 tracks behind Singapore Flyer) from 13 to 16 June 2013 for a jolly good time at Beerfest Asia 2013. Last year I had a wonderful chill out with my former colleagues (click here to see my blog post for Beerfest Asia 2012). This year, expect more than 300 types of beer from all over the world, live stage performances, a comedy club, beer auctions and tasting workshops. The organisers promise a distinct experience packed with great entertainment, drinks and food!

Every year, without fail, Beerfest Asia will introduce new beers to Singapore. This year, look out for new varieties such as the UK’s Hollows Ginger Beer (4.0% ABV) brewed with Chinese ginger root and German beer EKU 28, with a full-bodied malt aroma and one of the strongest beers in the world at 11% ABV. If you crave for a dessert beer, be sure to check out the new flavours of fruit beers from Taiwan Beer.

DSC03084

Besides being able to purchase bottled beer at special prices, tasting beers before purchase, and sampling beers new to either the festival or the market, ticket holders can learn how beer is made and try brewing it yourself at home at the new Craft Beer Experience section and even purchase a beer brewing kit home.

“We started this festival to raise the profile and appreciation of beer, and a significant part of the appreciation is understanding the process by which beer is made,” says Festival Director Edward Chia. “This is the only festival that not only makes this process highly interactive and entertaining, but also brings hundreds of the world’s best beers to you in one location.”

This year, the festival adds a new fourth marquee, Whisky & Wine Lounge, to its line up with a range of premium and limited edition products on offer and tasting from exhibitors, Cornerstone Wines and Beam Global.

Killer Queen

Entertainment is also one of the main highlights of this beer festival. After all, Timbre (the parent company of Beerfest Asia) is known for its booze and music. This year, be entertained by international tribute bands like Killer Queen, The Australian Guns’N’Roses Show, The Fortunate Sons, Melbourne’s premier Creedance Clearwater Revival (CCR)/Fogerty Tribute band and a host of the best of Singapore’s local bands, including Shagies and 53A.

Australian Guns and Roses Show 1 The Fortunate Sons

Also raising the bar on entertainment this year are Comedy Club Asia acts Sons of Singapore, a local comedy trio who were top performers at last year’s “Stand Up For Singapore” and a hit at Beerfest Asia 2012. The trio will be joined by international talents Tom Rhodes (USA), Stephen Grant (UK) and Steve Allison (AUS). Hosted by the popular and multi-linguistic comedic talent Jonathan Atherton, there is no better combination of award-winning wit, energy, intellect and absurdity. DJs from Power 98 will also be there on Friday, 14 June 2013 to entertain patrons of the festival.

Screen shot 2013-06-11 at PM 10.57.58

Can you handle the new Power 98 EXperience? Starting today, every weekday from 5pm to 8pm, tune in to Power 98 for The Ex-Factor. Listen as ex-lovers DJ Mister Young and Jacqui T.  host the evening drive time show, and expect lots of sarcasm, bitch slaps on air juxtapose with pockets of charming moments and lots of laughter in this first of this kind radio show in Singapore.

Radio has always been an integrated part of my life since the high school days. So imagine my excitement and glee when I received the invitation for a backstage tour of Power 98 studio and a chance to meet the voices behind one of my favorite radio stations, that spins music from the 90s and latest hits.

The Ex-Factor is the first radio show of it’s kind in Singapore. Honestly, the programme director must have gone nuts to put two ex-es together on the evening show. Oh wait, the programme director may have been one of the ex-es, Mister Young himself!

Mister Young (the weirdo who uses this pseudonym) is the Power 98’s Assistant Programme Director and on-air talent will be hosting the new evening prime time with his former lover, Jacqui T. Once romantically involved, they will now be hosting a juicy, no-holds-barred show set to rock the airwaves of our island.

That afternoon, we had an “intimate time” with the DJs, starting off with a game of ‘guessing your partner’s correct answer’. Each blogger got a chance to ask the DJ a question about his/her partner and he/she has to guess the correct answer from the partner. Eventually it was a tie between the two ex-es, and we proceed to the recording room to create our own sound clips.

Jacqui has been in the entertainment industry since 2006. Started out with a one-week stint on radio as Ms Personality from The New Paper New Face Contest, and moved on to host 987FM’s flagship show ‘Say It With Music’.

Mister Young is a veteran on-air talent with 11 years of experience entertaining folks through radio shows. He currently wears two hats at Power 98, one as a DJ and the other as the Assistant Programme Director.

“It’s must hear radio as the chemistry is definitely there but so is the drama! I think it’ll be interesting because we can’t bullsh*t with each other. It will be us at our most raw and unfiltered,” quips Mister Young. “This is definitely a show where sparks will fly!’

It was certainly a fun-filled afternoon with the two DJs and blogger pals Damien Wong (Uncle Teh Peng), Gin Wong, Kenny Tang, Andrea Chong and Jemimah (from That F Word) and Benita from Time Out magazine.

Bare Your Sexy Sole for a Good Cause

Kick off your shoes and join the 2013 Habitat-Barclays Bare Your Sole walk – a day of fun for the whole family for Habitat for Humanity Singapore’s local home clean up programme – Project Homeworks.

Everyday, people in developing countries & disaster-stricken places make their way through undesirable conditions – barefoot. The Habitat-Barclays Bare Your Sole 2013 barefoot walk is an initiative that lets us all raise awareness of these children and adults who live in dire conditions, and also raise much-needed funds for their local program to improve the living conditions of Singapore’s vulnerable elderly and handicapped.

This is a fun family and corporate event where thousands of Singaporeans come together and walk barefoot to experience walking with no shoes to remember those with no homes. You can go to http://bareyoursole.org.sg for a better picture of past years’ Bare Your Sole events! All proceeds go to Habitat’s local home clean-up program, Project Homeworks.

Dell’s latest Vostro 5460

Thinnest and lightest to date, Dell launched its latest line-up of ultra-portable laptops with the 14-inch Vostro laptop – the Dell Vostro 5460. Measuring only 18.3 mm and weighing at just 1.54 kg, the ultrathin Vostro 5460 delivers more power and portability for value-conscious who’s looking for mobility and performance at the right price.

“Dell’s Vostro line of laptops has always focused on delivering computing performance in a portable package, and today we are proud to bring that promise a step further,” said Deepak Wagh, general manager, Consumer and Small Business, Dell Singapore. “The thin and ultra lightweight Dell Vostro 5460 offers users a much sought-after level of mobility, performance and support together with business-friendly features to enhance everyday productivity.”

Sporting an expansive 14-inch high definition widescreen LED (HD WLED) TrueLife display that supports up to 1366 x 768 pixels, the new Vostro 5460 comes with integrated stereo speakers and a dedicated subwoofer powered by HD audio with Waves MaxxAudio 4.0. Users get to enjoy 720p video content in immersive audio and visual detail. The laptop also features an integrated 720HD 1MP camera with microphones for high-definition web-conferencing.

The Vostro 5460 is equipped with a full-sized Chiclet keyboard, a multi-touch gesture touchpad allowing users to fluidly navigate through the Windows 8 operating system, and a sophisticated cool-to-the-touch aluminum palm rest to ensure comfort for users. All these rich features are encased within a sleek brushed-aluminum chassis in graphite silver or fire red, and supported by a 3-cell integrated Lithium Ion battery providing up to 5 hours of battery life.

Connectivity is a breeze on the Vostro 5460 with 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and RJ-45 Ethernet port. Users can enjoy and share multimedia through three USB 3.0 ports, including one with Power Share, a SD Card Reader slot, a headphone/microphone combo jack and a HDMI port.

With third generation Intel Core i3 and i5 processors and integrated HD 4000 graphics at its core (or optional 2GB DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT630M graphics), users can opt for either the standard or Ultrabook configurations of the Vostro 5460. The 500GB HDD allows for plenty of documents and multimedia files to be stored and accessed on the go; and the 32GB SSD in the Ultrabook configuration delivers speedier performance and added storage.

The Vostro 5460 comes standard with Dell’s In-Home Service after Remote Diagnosis, as well as Dell Backup and Recovery Manager for reliable and fuss-free data protection. For added security of personal data and system files, the Ultrabook configuration also comes with Intel Anti-Theft Technology and Identity Protection Technology.

What I really love about Vostro 5460 is how Dell has successfully married functionality to affordability. I like a compact, slim and lightweight laptop without compromising the specifications. Another reason why I love Dell is their Customer Care. There is no need to queue when you encounter a problem, the experienced IT engineers will come knocking at your door after a simple phone call to their Technical Support for assistance.

Availability and Pricing:

The Dell Vostro 5460 is available today at the following starting prices (incl. GST):

•              Vostro 5460 with Windows 8 starts at S$749
