The multi-talented Ivan Heng plays Albin/Zaza, the ever popular diva of the club where Tony Eusoff plays George, his loving partner and host of the nightclub. Trouble brews as their 24 years old son, Jonathan announces after his holiday trip that he’ll be marrying the daughter of a right-wing anti-homosexual politician.

Featuring a mixture of local and international cast; The Cagelles performs as the flamboyant crew of cabaret dancers. The opening act reminds me the Simon Cabaret Show I watched while in Phuket last year. But of the fun of watching La Cage is in featuring out the real boobies from the fakes.

Winner of 11 Tony Awards and one of Broadway’s biggest hits, this adaption comes with a twist of Singlish and stand up comedy surrounding MRT breakdowns, fund raising for a certain pastor’s wife singing career, sex scandal involving high ranking officers and non-inclusiveness of the National Day Parade.

Behind the glimmers and glamorous, is a story that love transcends  all boundaries. 20 years later, are we still able to sing, “I am young and in love” to our partner? La Cage showcases the struggle when one is forced to choose lover over kinship and the reconciliation through love.

A must watch for all theatre and musical lovers, the only improvement I can ask is for Ivan Heng to reappear at the end of the finale as Zaza the diva instead of the white, well-pressed tailored suit.
